Chapter 8
Holden could see her shoulders shaking and knew what this news meant to her. He came close to losing the battle and just taking her in his arms.
A few minutes later she stirred. âWhatâs going to happen now?â
Holden sucked in his breath. âIâve already made plans for him,â he said, emotion behind his words.
Her head reared. She wiped the tears off her white cheeks. âSo he hid inside the building until he was sure everyone was gone before he went out to sabotage our car. Seth is evil.â
âThereâs no question the judge will say he was cold and calculating. I had those portions of the tapes enlarged and photos taken. Itâs all part of the evidence I gave the judge for the arrest warrant.â
She moaned. âI just canât believe what he did. All this time Iâve been cutting his hair while he pretended to be a friend. He killed Trent!â
Holdenâs heart went out to her for the pain she was having to relive. âHeâll be charged with first-degree murder. Though Seth didnât know Trent would get in an accident and die, the crime he committed was willful, deliberate and premeditated. Heâll go to prison for it.â
Jessica examined his rugged features. âTo think you caught him at last. Youâre phenomenal.â Her voice shook. âNo wonder you were elected sheriff. Iâm in awe of you, Holden, and so grateful youâve discovered what he did. I can never repay you enough.â
âYou played a part in this, too,â he stated. âIf you hadnât noticed that box of used ball joints, Seth would never have had to pay for his crime.â
She shook her head. âDonât give me credit. I would have seen them much sooner if I hadnât waited two years before cleaning the garage. Even then, I feel that someone was watching over me when I opened that box because it reminded me of the accident.â
âA higher power maybe?â
âYes. You were so wonderful to see me when I went to your office that day. Your taking me seriously helped reassure me so much.â
He covered her hand with his, unable to help it. âLetâs be thankful we were able to stop him from committing another crime.â
Her brow furrowed. âWhat do you mean?â
âI have no doubt in my mind heâs been waiting to have his chance with you for years. If you had eventually accepted a date with him without knowing what we know now, Iâm not sure he wouldnât have kidnapped you.â
âKidnapped?â
âHe fits the profile of a real psychopath. Thatâs why heâs under police surveillance as we speak. Once heâs arrested and taken to jail to be booked, Iâll be able to search his property, particularly his van, to see if my instincts bear out my theory.
âThink about it. Seth has already made the phone call to get you to go out with him. This man doesnât leave anything to chance. Heâs after you, but Iâm going to arrest him before he gets the opportunity to make another move.â
âW-what are you going to do?â she stammered.
